Review: Pretty graphic. A good way to describe this one. The violence is bloody and unwavering, and the open look at Greek culture in ancient times is unblinking. The theatrical release was quite a bit too much for many and the producers released the DVD in 2 formats. This is the first time i have ever seen a 'Director's cut' that had LESS footage than the theatrical release. I picked up the theatrical release simply because it cost less than the director's cut. Apparently they cut many scenes to make the Director's cut more palatable for the more sensitive and hoped it would help expand the viewer base. Either way, this is not a show for kids. Far to much violence and blood involved, and if you got the theatrical release, the sexual situations are a definite consideration since they were as unflinching in them as the violence. Unwavering from the cultural norms of taking both sexes as lovers in the Greek history of this time, they portrayed Alexander in this light. This alone caused the Greek government to condemn the movie and demand it be edited. For the love of Pete people, watch this BEFORE letting the kids see it. I thought it was a spectacular movie on a grand scale. I was uncomfortable with some of the sexual material, and feel the movie could have done without, but i looked around it to see a fantastic epic movie about one of the most powerful and history altering figures ever to have been born. For the mild hearted i would suggest the director's cut and for the stout of heart take a look at the theatrical release.
