Review:
Elijah Wood is Stu Simmons, a boy like any other in 1970, who, with his
sister, Lidia, wants to build the ultimate tree house where they can
enjoy the adventures of childhood as most kids would. Their father
Stephen (Costner) is a recently returned Vietnam Vet who is having
difficulty returning home, and finding meaningful work. Stephan has
dreams of rebuilding his families dreams and works hard to find a way
to retain his dignity and pride in the process. I found this slow
moving, but engrossing show to take me back to a time in the seventies
when kids still had tree forts as a major source of adventure and
wonder. Definitely a 'coming of age' film this one deals with the
horrors of war, the aftermath not only to the soldier, but their
family as well, and the struggle to return to a life of
peace.

Along
with that, it faces off against the most devastating things in a
child's life after having a parent come home safely from the most
dangerous adventure to a safe and secure family. Wood and Costner are
supported by a great cast and do a wonderful job in portraying the
characters they. Not just for young adults in the range of eleven to
mid or late teens, this is one that will bore most, but also bring up
the subject of loosing a loved one in more than one way. It's a great
learning tool, so think about it when dealing with loosing a parent to
war or other causes.
Plot: Kevin Costner
plays the father of Elijah Wood in this Coming of Age drama about a
father returning from war to try to rebuild his family and his life.
Wood plays a boy trying to cope with the loss of his father to the
depression and rage of war, as he tried to defend what's his from his
arch nemesis. Powerful stories with solid and believable performances
make this a must see film.
